Ways of Listening
This summer, I had the honor of participating in "Ways of Listening”, a group exhibition at the Charlotte Street Foundation curated by Kimi Kitada. This experiential sound exhibition merged visual art and sonic expression, inspired by Pauline Oliveros, a visionary artist who championed the practice of deep listening. Oliveros believed deeply in the power of sound to erode boundaries, and this exhibition provided a beautiful opportunities for visitors to explore the delicate lines between seeing and hearing.
I was invited to perform at the opening night reception, which was particularly special for me—it marked the first time my father saw me perform with Coloratura in person. After spending 15 years working overseas, he’s finally retired and is back in Kansas City for good. His steadfast support for my project from afar has been invaluable, but having him in the audience and seeing his excitement and pride in real time, was truly unforgettable. He’s now accompanying me to almost every event, serving as my hype-man, photographer, videographer, and voice of reason when things get tough. I’m so grateful to have him in my corner!
The Ways of Listening exhibition featured an incredible array of artists, each exploring the intersection of sound and visual art, including one of my dear colleagues and friends, choreographer/movement artist Oscar Trujillo.
The exhibition ran from July 26th to September 7th, offering visitors the chance to engage with sound on their own terms. A special zine, designed by Lilah Powlas, was produced to accompany the show, with sound scores contributed by each of the featured artists, encouraging visitors to extend their experience beyond the gallery walls.
