Chromatone 3

22” x 22”
Sumi Ink on Habotai Silk

Chromatone was created via Coloratura, a system of paintbrushes that create music and art simultaneously. Each brush is assigned to a different color and musical note to simulate synesthesia.

Chromatone merges the modern with the ancient, using the technique of suminagashi, a form of Japanese water marbling dating back to the 9th century. In suminagashi art, pigment is carefully applied to a bin of water drop by drop, creating beautiful abstract concentric circles that ebb and flow with the movement of the water. The breath is used to move the pigment into unique patterns. Once the design is complete, it can be transferred to fabric or alum-treated paper to permanently preserve it.
